Beloit sits on the Solomon River, northeast of the center of Mitchell County. A. A. Bell first settled the site in 1868, and for a time it was known as Willow Springs. [6]

Tim Hersey, one of the founders and the town's first mayor, renamed it after his hometown of Beloit, Wisconsin. The town was platted on March 26, 1872, and Governor John P. St. John proclaimed it a city of the second class on March 10, 1879. [6]

Beloit was chosen as the county seat when Mitchell County was permanently organized in 1870. An iron bridge was built across the Solomon River in 1873. [6]
